HKU lecture
Willem Verweyen took this picture of my lecture at the art-academy of Utrecht. It was great fun to show my portfolio and get involved with the students.

LOUIS WAIN hommage

As a child I was hugely impressed by the schizofrenic art of Louis Wain (1860-1936). This 'cat' is my version of one of his drawings. It is featured in this months edition of Tubelight Magazine. Happy Halloween!

GLITZ AND THEN SOME poster I

I'm on a small break right now from a project that was handed out to me by Hansje van Halem. She accepted an assignment to design a poster for a contemparary jewelry exposition called 'GLITZ AND THEN SOME...'(to be honest I don't know the exact details but I'll update soon!). After a night at our favorite cafe it was decided after a lot of beers and begging from my side that I could design the poster but I had to use Hansje's typeface 'Gaasletter'.
Since the assigment wasn't exactly clear about wich info it had to communicate I decided that it shouldn't communicate anything at all. I decided to 'Damien Hirst' Hansje's lowercase 'g' and make the poster into a platform for more autonominous work. The gems are made out of shades of CMYK... a little inside joke to Hansje cause we both work mainly in black and white and can be a bit clueless when it comes to using colors.
This is the process:
A lot of work since I have to put each of the 'gems' in there one at the time...I'm finishing it right now. 100 posters will be printed. The final result will soon be on the site.
gotta work!

OUWE PIK OUWE PIJP III
Hi everybody!
It's been a while since my last update. That's because I've been organising a new short film festival. We (Gijs, Dirk, Frederik, Joost, Arie en two Maartens) are planning to have the festival for ± 200 people on the roof of the HorseMoveProjectSpace. Feel free to join and send in your short films. Visit our website http://www.ouwepikouwepijp.nl for more info!
About the design... sometimes you got to break from your usual norms. I tried to make everything as lighthearted as possible. No homemade typefaces, no fancy OpArt-stuff..just a happy and funny design.

TYPEFACE THE SUPERVILLAIN

This character is called TYPEFACE. He is one of spiderman's villains. He is supposed to be a typefacedesigner who became frustrated during a war (or something) and then became a terrorist, spreading havock with his evil serifs (a well known problem amongst typeface-designers ofcourse). I guess they ran out of inspiring villains down at Marvel-Comics.

new experiments
The last weeks I noticed that I'd run a little dry on inspiration so I've decided to go on holiday next week and leave my graphic design in Amsterdam. It was only till today that I could play a little on illustrator and try out new stuff. This is a little experiment which I want to continue after my holiday. It's based on 19th century typefaces and ornaments (again...I will grow out of it someday I promise!) but with a hypnotic op-art twist. Hope you like it!

Update on the 7TON-project
I've decided to make an entire typeface for the 7TON project. The concept of the type will be based on 19th-century ornamented typefaces. The type will be handdrawn to give it some schwung. This is more the less the method of drawing them.
I printed out sheets with a orthogonal grid on them (same dimensions architects use). These are the templates for my typeface.

Then I trace these sketches.

Then I add shadows (in photoshop).

And then I convert them to bitmap with a line-raster (the actual raster will be much finer, this is just an example).

This will be more or less the process. So far I've done like 9 letters... keep you updated

OUWE PIK OUWE PIJP FESTIVAL
In february I organised a short-film-festival together with Gijs Weijer. This is the trailer. The festival was a big succes. 47 people showed up in my small living room to enjoy over 50 short films. For more info and movieclips check youtube
You hear me singing in the background...I was going to overdub the movieclip with some music but after hearing the original soundtrack I thought it would be funny to leave it this way. The song on the end (de Kift, Orenmens) was instantly the soundtrack for the evening.

HORSEMOVE PROJECT the object

So:ren and I decided it would be a good idea to buid a miniature HORSEMOVEPROJECT-OBJECT so that it could function as a outdoor-sign as well as a bench...or something like that. The first day we built a white one.....and for some reason I can't recall we also did a black one. The white one is destroyed but the black one is still used.
